· You must directly incorporate a minimum of three credible, relevant sources of information. One of your sources may be an interview (in person or via telephone, email, or other media) with a credible, relevant exert.
NOTE: If working in a group, each group member is responsible for writing either the Executive Summary, Introduction, or Conclusion, AND each member must write one complete ‘body’ section of the report.

· Your report must follow all of the appropriate writing and formatting conventions described in this course. Refer to the Business Report Writing Guidelines document for further information.
Topics
For each of these topics, assume that your employer or manager asked you to write the report.
· Four of my employees have taken time off work because of repetitive strain injuries. What are the primary causes of repetitive strain injuries in a company like ours? What are some Canadian companies doing to prevent them?
· Our servers seem to be constantly tied up with employees’ personal email and Internet searches. It would cost our company too much to increase our bandwidth or server size, so I’d like to ban employees from using our computers for personal email or Internet searches. In order to enforce this ban, I would have to monitor all of the transactions that our employees conduct on the Internet. What are the Canadian legal, ethical and/or financial issues involved in monitoring employees while they use the Internet?
· I’ve hired a person who requires a wheelchair to get around. In Canada, how am I legally and ethically obligated to accommodate this person so that they can work? (Think in terms of physical changes I might have to make to the workplace, equipment I may have to provide, and changes I might have to make to where, when and how the new employee works.)
· My high employee turnover is costing me a lot of money in lost training hours. What are some other Canadian companies doing to retain employees?
· I’ve just received a petition from some of my employees who have young children. They would like our company to sponsor an in-house daycare centre. I’d like you to write a report on how having an in-house daycare centre might benefit or hurt our company. Don’t worry about the financial costs; focus on issues like attracting and retaining employees (on the positive side) and insurance liability (on the negative side). Discuss what other Canadian businesses have done to incorporate daycare centres into their operations.
· Every year at the employee appreciation party, I worry about serving alcohol. For example, if one of my employees drinks too much and becomes injured during or after the party, will I be held liable? What are other companies doing about serving alcohol at parties? Make sure you discuss only Canadian issues of law and Canadian companies.
· I’m going to be finalizing a business deal with an important colleague from ____ (insert a country you might be interested in researching here). I want to make sure that my colleague feels respected. What do I need to know about the business culture of ____? Focus exclusively on issues that might arise from a business context, such as formally greeting a client, exchanging gifts with clients, showing respect, and negotiating and closing deals.
If your instructor allows it, you may choose your own topic. However, you must submit it to your instructor for approval before you begin working on it.
Important: Reports on topics that have not been approved by your instructor may not be awarded a grade.
