Quantitative research methods are used when something needs to be measured, while qualitative methods are used when a question needs to be described and investigated more in-depth.  Qualitative research is a method of inquiry that develops an understanding of human and social sciences in order to find the way people think and feel. Quantitative research is a research method that is used to generate numerical data and hard facts, by employing statistical, logical, and mathematical techniques (Shields & Twycross, 2003). Qualitative research is one that provides insights and understanding of the problem. Quantitative data aims at establishing cause and effect relationship between two variables by using mathematical and statistical methods. The research is also known as empirical research as it can be accurately and precisely measured.  The qualitative research follows a subjective approach as the researcher is intimately involved, whereas the approach of quantitative research is objective, as the researcher is uninvolved and attempts to precise the observations and analysis on the topic to answer the inquiry (Shields & Twycross, 2003). Qualitative research is conducted by participating in interviews and focus groups.   In quantitative research are structured interviews, surveys, and observations.  Use quantitative research if your goal is to confirm something or use qualitative research if you want to understand something.
