Assignment #1 Topic: Positions for Labour

You are required to create a teaching tool. The target audience of your teaching tool is novice perinatal/neonatal nurses. (Think of it as teaching your classmates about your chosen topic). You must provide evidence that you have researched the topic thoroughly in the scholarly literature (e.g.) nursing journals and current clinical guidelines (if guidelines exist). Ensure that your presentation method is an effective way to reach the targeted audience and is in a format that can be submitted and viewed by your classmates. The teaching tool must address two key areas; how your topic relates to the mother and how your topic relates to the fetus/neonate.

· This is meant to be a brief teaching tool therefore the required length is: 8-10 slide power point presentation (excluding title slide and references, NO presenter notes)

· The references can be added to a reference page at the end. APA referencing is required (author, year) within the tool, however APA formatting is NOT required (no specific font size/type required).

· When you use references within the slide or pamphlet, cite within the slide or pamphlet and then reference the citation on the reference page — referring to APA 6.11 — “Each reference cited in text must appear in the reference list, and each entry in the reference list must be cited in text”. I realize this quote refers to referencing in text, however, we want you to follow this rule within your teaching tools in order to emphasize the need to source the professional literature — and to allow others reading your tools to readily locate the sources for further reference and information.

·

· Or in other words, when you reference a picture or article within the slide or pamphlet, list the author (year) under all referenced information and pictures, and then write out the full reference in the reference list. Under pictures, the author and year can be minimized so as not to be visually distracting.

· It is an expectation that the reference page is submitted in APA format — including font and size, author, year, spacing, hanging indent.

Please use the following quotes and the articles I have attached. It needs to look good and have referenced pictures as well.

“Frequent changes of position during labour relieve fatigue, increase comfort, and improve circulation. Certain positions are anatomically beneficial in allowing gravity to advance the fetus through the birth canal and may help in opening the pelvic diameters to allow fetal descent and rotation. In early labour contractions may also be improved by upright positions and ambulation.”

“Some pain management options allow the woman to continue with upright postures and mobility while others require her to limit her mobility and thus potentially impact the progress of labour.”

“Positioning for second-stage labor may be determined by the woman’s preference, but choices are limited by her condition or that of the fetus, the environment, and the health care provider’s confidence in assisting in a birth in a specific position.’ (Page 327)

“For laboring women, upright positions and mobility may be more pleasant than lying in bed. These practices have also been associated with improved uterine contraction intensity and shorter labours, less need for pain medications, a reduced rate of operative birth (e.g., cesarean birth, forceps- and vacuum-assisted birth) increased maternal autonomy and control, distraction from the discomforts of labour, and an opportunity for close interaction with the woman’s partner and care provider as they help her assume upright positions and remain mobile.” (Page 394)

“The woman can use a birth ball (gymnastic ball, physical therapy ball) to support her body as she assumes a variety of labor and birth positions.” (Page 395)

“For women receiving epidural anesthesia, use of a peanut ball may be beneficial. Epidural anesthesia is associated with prolonged second-stage labor and increased frequency of instrumental-assisted birth.” (Page 395)
