Assignment #1 Topic: Positions for Labour

You are required to create a teaching tool. The target audience of your teaching tool is novice perinatal/neonatal nurses. (Think of it as teaching your classmates about your chosen topic). You must provide evidence that you have researched the topic thoroughly in the scholarly literature (e.g.) nursing journals and current clinical guidelines (if guidelines exist). Ensure that your presentation method is an effective way to reach the targeted audience and is in a format that can be submitted and viewed by your classmates. The teaching tool must address two key areas; how your topic relates to the mother and how your topic relates to the fetus/neonate.

· This is meant to be a brief teaching tool therefore the required length is: 8-10 slide power point presentation (excluding title slide and references, NO presenter notes)

· The references can be added to a reference page at the end. APA referencing is required (author, year) within the tool, however APA formatting is NOT required (no specific font size/type required). 

· When you use references within the slide or pamphlet, cite within the slide or pamphlet and then reference the citation on the reference page — referring to APA 6.11 — “Each reference cited in text must appear in the reference list, and each entry in the reference list must be cited in text”. I realize this quote refers to referencing in text, however, we want you to follow this rule within your teaching tools in order to emphasize the need to source the professional literature — and to allow others reading your tools to readily locate the sources for further reference and information.


· Or in other words, when you reference a picture or article within the slide or pamphlet, list the author (year) under all referenced information and pictures, and then write out the full reference in the reference list. Under pictures, the author and year can be minimized so as not to be visually distracting. 

· It is an expectation that the reference page is submitted in APA format — including font and size, author, year, spacing, hanging indent.

Based on your review of the literature, current practice recommendations, and standards of practice (within 5 years).

· What is the impact of your topic on fetal/neonatal health/well-being and/or care? E.g.Are there risks/benefits to discuss? Are there positive/negative influences on the fetus/neonate? (6 marks)

· What is the “take home message” of your teaching? (One sentence). (2 marks)

Style/Format/Engagement of audience (5 marks): Ensure the teaching tool you have created is appropriate for your intended audience

· The content is presented clearly and concisely, with accurate information and appropriate language.

· If your presentation is written, ensure there is correct spelling and punctuation.

· Ensure the ideas/language/style of the teaching tool are appropriate for the intended audience and is visually engaging.

References (4 marks): APA referencing required in text (author, year). APA formatting NOT required in teaching tool (no specific font size/type required), but is required for reference list.

· Use at least 3-5 current (within last 5 years) scholarly/peer reviewed articles in addition to course content (text and modules).

· APA formatted reference list

· Use of provincial, national, or international guidelines if they exist. (If necessary, these references can be submitted with Part B of your assignment).
