My name is Ujjain Kumara during the Gupta empire just a merchant that trades within the silk roads.
The silk road has opened many things to our empire from goods to a newfound religion. We speak of Muslim almost the same as our Hindu religion. From a merchant’s view, It is amazing with all the trading we can do. Some people speak that we are getting slowly infiltrated but I have only made money since! I have been up charging them since they don’t really know what I sell. Though many have talked about the new religion as a copy of ours. Maybe it is the same god we need more knowledge to know. Our king has given more and more passage to these trades so it must be helping us. I feel great that we can make even more money from these trades. Our king Gupta certainly knows what he is doing. That is how I feel about it

My name is Madhav Kapadia. I am the eldest son in a merchant family in Tamil Nadu, a southernmost point in all of India ruled by the Cholas Dynasty. (Chandwani) We are in the Vaishya caste, and as such our main way of living is through trade. I am familiar with the on-land routes of the Silk Road, but I travel by water trade routes in the Indian Ocean. Many men come from far and wide to trade with us and other Vaishya families for our spices and fabrics, giving us exotic luxury goods and art. (“Goods Traded on the Silk Road.”) There have been many influential ideas brought through trade, most of which pertain to music, art, architecture, and writing. Languages like Arabic and Persian have become common, and we can communicate the locations of goods and important trade routes to foreigners. Even systems of government and new religious beliefs have made their way across the Silk Road. (“Art and Cultural Exchange along the Silk Road.”) One of the most influential ideas brought to India has been Islam. Though Islam has been here longer, the Silk Road spread it even faster. While I am Hindu myself, I have no problem with those who follow Islam. Many of my brothers however believe that Islam is to blame for the invasions of our land in recent times. But from what I have heard, they do not come to convert us but to steal our valuables from us. With much of the conquest being up north, I no longer have as much to trade and make money from. While their invasion has changed the way of life up north, it had destroyed much of us merchants’ livelihoods. Tamil Nadu has stayed safe from Muslim invasion, but many other Hindus suffer and lose their temples in the rest of India. It is humiliating that only the most important of our temples were destroyed while leaving smaller local ones, solely to affect us personally. (Pillalmarri) I do not believe Islam is to blame, but the Muslim invaders and their greed and ego.

As born into a family of the Kshatriyas caste (SetFree, 2021), it was a rather fulfilling life as a man in Ancient India. My name is Aayush and I am a merchant who lives in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. I have been along the ports of the west coast that sells spices in foreign lands like Egypt and the east coast of Africa. My main ports of trade are Kilwa of Tanzania and Mombasa of Kenya. (Mishra, 1970) A lot of the trading traditions I know are due to the silk road that goes from Roman Cities to China. From Athens to Xi’an, my spices from home are very much appreciated in everyday food consumption. Because of my job, I am required to know how to communicate to other merchants from different lands, thus learning Mandarin and Italian along the Silk Road. Cultural traditions from China have had a huge impact on my life. When first arriving in Xi’an, the clothes were the first to catch my eye. It was far from what I grew up knowing and the more time I spent in Xi’an, the more time I begun to learn their religion.
I grew up worshipping Shiva and Meenakshi (Mingren, 2017) , as many people in my home town did. But as I found myself drawn the Chinese Religion and spiritual practices. I started to worship many of their gods as well. The one of my favorite was the Dragon King, Yinglong. The story of Dragons holding ying-yang (Ludovico, 2016) energies within them reminded me of the Buddhist teaching of meditation that I’ve learned as well.
Having such respect for the religions and spiritual practices that I have been taught along the Silk Road by thousands of people, Islamic practices have also had a huge impact on my life as well. My one goal now, as I get older is to join my non-blood brothers at the celebration of Hajj (Infoplease Staff, 2021) in the center of the Religion’s home in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

This week we focused on India and its transition to Islam. We looked at the development of dynastic rule, global economic ties, and the spread of ideas and religions such as Buddhism and Islam.
