Porter’s five forces model is a standard for industry analysis, used extensively to understand the core profitability of a market. Because you have been hired to provide expert objective insight, you are expected to deliver a deep-level analysis using the Porter model. It is not the obvious factors, such as “the existing competition will fight for market share,” that create confidence in your ability from the client. It is the identification of the core foundational elements of an industry and the complicated interaction of external and therefore non-controllable factors that determine if a product launch is likely to be successful. Identifying those factors will make you seem valuable to your client.
It is very likely that JGJ Inc. may not have all of the required internal competencies and resources necessary to compete in the new market. Since you are not an insider, you do not know all of your client’s capabilities, capacities, and resources. You do not need to know. Your role here is to provide a thorough objective description of what is needed, not to analyze or rate your client. Therefore, you will need to provide an objective overview of these needed competencies and resources so JGJ’s management team can determine what it has and what it needs.

Analysis of Key External Factors in the Market

Porter’s Five Forces is a simple but powerful tool for understanding the competitiveness of your business environment and determining the potential profitability of your strategy. This is useful because you will be able to adjust your strategy if you understand the forces in your environment or industry that can affect your profitability. For example, you could take advantage of a strong position or strengthen a weak one to avoid making mistakes in the future (Porter’s Five Forces: – Understanding Competitive Forces to Maximize Profitability, n.d.).

 

Competitive Rivalry: The automotive industry is fiercely competitive, but the fully electric vehicle industry is unique and only moderately competitive. Companies are rapidly investing in electric vehicle charging stations. This market has the potential to become extremely competitive in the future. Thus, JGJ can stay ahead of the competition by differentiating its product and providing excellent customer service. JGJ can also stay ahead of the competition by setting competitive pricing on its products.

 

Supplier Power: Consumers are being drawn in by increased battery capacity and the availability of various models of electric vehicles. The growing number of electric vehicles is expected to provide numerous opportunities for the electric vehicle charging station market. Furthermore, the collaboration with Enel-X opens a plethora of opportunities for dependable and less expensive equipment, saving money.
 

Buyer Power: The increased awareness of energy conservation and concerns about harmful emissions that contribute to global warming has resulted in a shift in the use of electric vehicles. Because electric vehicles do not emit harmful gases and conserve energy, this is the primary driver of the EV Charging Stations Market. The macroenvironment of a firm contains elements that can have an impact on the firm but are generally beyond its direct control. These elements are universal characteristics of the world, and they are factors that all businesses must deal with, regardless of industry or type of business. PESTEL is a tool that prompts managers to consider several distinct categories in the macroenvironment. PESTEL, like SWOT, is an acronym. The letters, in this case, represent the categories to be investigated: political factors, economic factors, sociocultural factors, technological factors, environmental factors, and legal factors (“firm’s external macro environment: PESTEL – Principles of management,” 2019).

Technology: There are significant technological barriers and uncertainties. For example, EV battery swap technology and smart grid technology have gotten a lot of media and investor attention, but our research shows that these technologies have some drawbacks. The EV industry is young and highly dynamic, and changes in technology are likely as the industry matures. JGJ will implement these technological changes and ensure that they are implemented consistently.

Required Internal Resources and Competencies to Compete in the Market

The charging environment is still in its early stages. However, as electric vehicle sales increase and battery ranges expand, customers will develop a diverse set of needs, ranging from private charging at home and work to public charging while traveling and at destinations. JGJ’s strategy for running this process focuses primarily on infrastructure, technology, and service. The most likely players in this space are equipment suppliers, CPOs, and specialty software, developers. This role develops software for CPOs and e-MSPs; such software is typically designed to provide a variety of functionalities, such as charging network monitoring and remote diagnosis, payment processing, and billing, and energy management. JGJ’s functionality is dependent on the service it provides to its customers, making it appealing to them.

Required Licenses, Patents, and Rulings or Legal Requirements to Compete in the Market

Assembly Bill
AB) 1236 requires all cities and counties to develop an expedited, streamlined permitting process for all levels of electric vehicle charging stations (level 1, level 2, and DCFC).
JGJ must submit a checklist of all requirements needed for the expedited review posted on the Authority Having Jurisdiction (usually a city or county) website. It should be reviewed with a focus on health and safety. JGJ needs to manage the zoning conflicts. JGJ needs to provide accessibility to plug-in electric vehicle charging stations. JGJ should look for Van Accessible, Standard Accessible, Ambulatory Spaces, and Drive-Up Spaces.
To expedite the process, JGJ should get in contact with utility service to ensure they understand what components a utility will require for an application to be deemed “complete.” After permits are issued and installation of the charger is complete, a final inspection is required to receive final approval to operate the station. The building inspector inspects the site to see if the station passes key tests like secure mounting and fastening. Stations go through a brief commissioning process that typically takes a few hours after construction and review and before they are activated for operation (two days at most).
